2016 Bollinger B Brut, in its own gift box, is a limited vintage release from one of Champagne's last fiercely traditional houses, built around a season that swung from a cold, wet spring to a warm summer.

The blend leans on Pinot Noir with a supporting share of Chardonnay from Grand and Premier Cru sites in the Montagne de Reims. In keeping with Bollinger's house style, the wine is vinified entirely in barrel rather than steel, using the estate's own stock of old oak casks maintained by its resident cooper. Sealed under natural cork, it rests on its lees for around seven years, then is riddled and disgorged by hand.

Bollinger's home vineyard was the first in Champagne to earn France's High Environmental Value certification, and two years later became the first to receive Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne accreditation, with this release packaged in a largely recycled, fully recyclable box.

The house was founded in Aÿ in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger with Paul Renaudin and the Comte de Villermont, but it was Madame Lily Bollinger, who took charge in 1941, who defined its character, running the estate through the Second World War and touring the vineyards by bicycle. Still family-owned, it remains one of the few in Champagne to keep its own cooper and insist on barrel fermentation.

Tasting notes

Born from the atypical 2016 growing season, this limited-edition vintage blends 73% Pinot Noir with 27% Chardonnay from the latest-ripening crus of the Montagne de Reims, fermented in oak barrels and aged over seven years on the lees. Golden in hue, it offers ripe fruit, fruit jelly and almond paste aromas alongside mirabelle plum and vine peach. The palate is generous yet chiselled, with pear, fresh almond and candied lemon framed by a saline, velvety finish.
