Women have been making their mark in the wine industry for centuries, yet their contributions haven’t always been in the spotlight. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate four incredible women winemakers whose passion, expertise, and leadership have shaped the world of wine. From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the legendary vineyards of Sicily, Veneto, and Australia, these women are redefining winemaking while crafting some of the most exceptional wines in the world.

Join us in raising a glass to Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini (Altesino), Francesca Planeta (Planeta), Stephanie Dutton (Penfolds), and Sabrina Tedeschi (Fratelli Tedeschi)—four pioneers blending tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for terroir.
Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini: The Visionary Behind Altesino (Tuscany, Italy)

From Cinema to Cellars
Before stepping into the world of winemaking, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini had a successful career in cinema and publishing. However, a deep love for the Tuscan countryside led her to acquire Altesino in 2002, one of the most respected wineries in Montalcino, Tuscany.
Shaping Brunello’s Future
Elisabetta’s leadership has solidified Altesino’s place as a benchmark producer of Brunello di Montalcino. She champions a philosophy of blending tradition with modernity—introducing innovations like the first-ever Cru-designated Brunello with "Montosoli."

Francesca Planeta, The Ambassador of Sicilian Wine (Planeta, Sicily)

A Family Legacy with a Global Vision
Winemaking runs in Francesca Planeta’s blood. As a member of the famous Planeta family, she played a pivotal role in transforming Sicilian wine from rustic to world-class. With an international education in economics and marketing, she took on the mission of making Sicily’s indigenous grapes known and respected worldwide.
"Ambition first, then you can discover that you are talented too." - Francesca Planeta – Planeta
Championing Native Sicilian Grapes
Francesca is a passionate advocate for Nero d’Avola, Frappato, and Carricante—grapes that thrive in Sicily’s diverse terroir, from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna to coastal vineyards kissed by Mediterranean breezes. She’s also a driving force behind sustainable winemaking and the protection of Sicily’s biodiversity.

Stephanie Dutton, The Trailblazer at Penfolds (Australia)

From a Glass of Grange to the Helm of Penfolds
Unlike many winemakers born into the trade, Stephanie Dutton’s journey began with a single sip. While studying viticulture, she had her first taste of Penfolds Grange—one of Australia’s most iconic wines—and was instantly hooked.
Blazing a Path in a Male-Dominated Industry
Stephanie joined Penfolds in 2007 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the youngest senior winemakers in the company’s 180-year history. Today, she works alongside Chief Winemaker Peter Gago, blending wines that continue to uphold Penfolds' legendary status. She’s also an outspoken advocate for mentorship and gender equality in the wine industry.
"I speak about backing your intuitive feelings in winemaking all the time. Women consider things with such care and thought that we often ignore intuition, even though it serves us so well." - Stephanie Dutton, Penfolds

Sabrina Tedeschi, The Custodian of Amarone (Tedeschi, Veneto, Italy)

A Deep Connection to Valpolicella’s Heritage
For Sabrina Tedeschi, wine isn’t just a business—it’s a family tradition dating back to 1630. As the winemaker for Fratelli Tedeschi, she carries forward centuries of expertise in Valpolicella, the heartland of Amarone della Valpolicella.
Elevating Amarone to Art
Sabrina has been instrumental in modernizing production methods while staying true to Amarone’s roots. She meticulously selects grapes from the best hillside vineyards, ensuring the signature richness and intensity of Tedeschi’s wines. Under her guidance, the winery continues to produce some of the most elegant and age-worthy Amarones on the market.
